HYROX is a strength-based fitness competition designed for hybrid athletes who want to challenge their performance across both endurance and power disciplines. Known as the world’s fastest-growing indoor fitness race, it combines running with functional strength movements in a structured, testable format.
At Evolution Physical Therapy, located inside Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy in Stamford, CT (and at Playa Vista EFIT in Los Angeles, CA), we offer a science-based HYROX training program built on periodized strength development, structured conditioning, and expert coaching.

What is HYROX?
HYROX is a standardized, global fitness competition that includes:
- 8 x 1 km runs
- Each run followed by a functional workout station
The complete race structure includes:
- Ski Erg
- Sled Push
- Sled Pull
- Burpee Broad Jumps
- Rowing
- Farmer’s Carry
- Sandbag Lunges
- Wall Balls
The event typically takes 60–90 minutes to complete and tests an athlete’s strength, stamina, coordination, and mental endurance. Unlike CrossFit or obstacle course racing, HYROX uses the same format worldwide, making it measurable, progressive, and scalable for all levels.

At Evolution Physical Therapy, our Stamford-based HYROX program is grounded in strength-first programming. Functional strength is not just part of HYROX; it is the limiter for most athletes.
Our strength-driven training model includes:
- Weekly progressive resistance sessions focused on the big lifts and movement patterns relevant to HYROX (sled drive mechanics, carries, lunges, wall balls)
- Fatigue-based strength circuits that simulate real race transitions
- Emphasis on eccentric control, joint health, and muscular endurance
This is not a “WOD-style” program built on randomized circuits. Our periodization model is designed to develop long-term power and performance capacity through intelligent stress loading and adaptation.
Hybrid Athlete Training with Integrated Endurance Coaching
HYROX is more than lifting. It demands high levels of aerobic capacity and running economy. As a former sprinter and competitive football player, I (Coach Alex Erbsland) personally lead the running program at Evolution, designing endurance training and teaching proper running form both in and outside the gym.
We help athletes improve their endurance through:
- Customized running programs (intervals, tempo, long aerobic work) based on race goals and conditioning level
- Gait mechanics analysis and coaching for proper foot strike, cadence, and running posture
- Outdoor run strategy for Fairfield County athletes (e.g., pacing for Cove Island Park, Waveny Park, or West Beach trails)
- Breathwork and recovery protocols tied to energy system development
This hybrid approach ensures that you’re not just lifting well, but also running efficiently and recovering properly. We coach you to become a true hybrid athlete who can handle both sides of the HYROX equation.
HYROX Periodization & Programming Model
Our HYROX programming follows a structured, three-phase training cycle:
- General Prep (Aerobic base + Movement mechanics)
- Specific Prep (Load tolerance + Threshold work)
- Race Prep (Simulation + Recovery taper)
We use heart-rate training, RPE scaling, and progressive overload to manage intensity across the week. High-intensity race simulation workouts are strategically placed to ensure optimal adaptation without overtraining.
Group HYROX classes and private coaching sessions integrate:
- Station-specific technique development
- Run-station transitions and time management
- Mobility, stability, and joint control exercises
- Deload weeks and active recovery protocols
Every aspect of the program is designed to support athlete development, prevent injury, and maximize race-day performance.
