Deep Tissue Massage
If you have muscle tension, knots, or even mobility issues, you may benefit from a deep-tissue massage. A deep tissue massage utilizes techniques that are meant to reach the deep muscles and tissues of your body as well as treat musculoskeletal issues. In fact, deep-tissue massages are a very common treatment for strains and other sports-related injuries and while they can offer a release from pain and help with injury rehabilitation, they are also known to provide stress relief and relaxation.
Where can I get a Deep Tissue Massage?

Our trained professionals will use deep-tissue massages to treat your injuries and provide pain relief to improve your quality of life. We serve 14 locations in the United States, spanning three different regions and four different states.
What is a Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massages incorporate physical relaxation to help treat musculoskeletal injuries and stiffness. A physical therapist will apply sustained pressure, using slow, deep strokes to target your muscles and connective tissues. This allows scar tissue to break following an injury and also reduces tension. Deep tissue massages can help your body heal faster by increasing blood flow to reduce inflammation.
When dealing with injuries or muscle tension, there are usually adhesions in the muscles that can block circulation and cause pain and inflammation. A deep tissue massage works to break down the adhesions to relieve pain and improve your quality of life. While other massages focus on relaxation, deep tissue massages use physical relaxation in a specific area to alleviate pain.
Deep Tissue Massage versus Sports Massage
Make no mistake, sports massages can use a variety of deep tissue and stretching movements that are targeted to a specific area. Sports massages may also use some softer tissue work than a traditional deep tissue massage. At Evolution, our physical therapists can incorporate deep tissue into either a sports massage or provide the more traditional deep tissue massage which tends to be a more ‘whole body’ massage.
Deep Tissue Massage versus Swedish Massage
A Swedish massage is a whole-body massage that is more gentle than a deep tissue massage. Swedish massages can help relieve tension and increase circulation. They are meant to be relaxing and calming, relieving discomfort and easing tension in the body. Since deep tissue massages are meant to address chronic pain or help rehabilitate injury, they are more targeted than a Swedish massage and in some cases may be slightly uncomfortable when more force is used to massage a targeted area.
