Head & Brain Conditions Treated with Physical Therapy

Common Approaches to Treating Issues with the Head and Brain
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Vestibular rehabilitation is carried about by an Evolution team member trained specifically in the approach. It is used to help treat feelings of vertigo, spinning, tilting, and other symptoms of unsteadiness. Often it can be the only treatment someone suffering may need, but it also may be part of a pre/post surgery plan. Exercises you might do as part of vestibular rehabilitation include balance retraining, vision stability training, posture training, neck mobility exercises, and strength and flexibility conditioning.
Treatment usually involves one or two treatments per week for one to two months.
Proprioception Training
Proprioception training focuses on improving the body’s ability to sense movements, what act is being carried out, and where the body is located. It can be used as a preventative measure to help improve spatial awareness and balance.
Proprioception, or body awareness, is tied between the proprioceptors, soft tissues and the nervous system. Proprioceptors are sensors on nerve endings found in many parts of your body, including the muscles, tendons, joints, skin, and inner ear. They’re what help your body adjust to walking in the sand versus walking on rocks or a sidewalk.
Depending on what condition you are suffering from, proprioception training can be used to mitigate risk of injury during sports or falling during everyday activities. It can also be used to help compensate for symptoms experienced during head trauma.
Your training regimen will be specifically outlined for you by your physical therapist and will be carried out both with your therapist and then on your own at home down the road.
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy is a core treatment by all of Evolution’s physiotherapists and can be applied in several different manners. It involves highly-specific techniques that will be applied to your cervical and thoracic spine as well as surrounding soft tissue when dealing with head and brain conditions. This can be used for pain relief, passive exercise and mobilization.
