BioMechanical Assessments with Corrective Exercises
A biomechanical assessment is an analysis of your musculoskeletal system’s moving parts, especially from the feet to lower back. No matter what skill level you are, your body’s mechanics can have one part or another that doesn’t move optimally. Evolution Physical Therapy can assess and correct these inefficiencies, subsequently reducing pain and fatigue while improving performance.
Our biomechanical assessments with corrective exercises are one of our core service offerings and therefore can be found at all our locations. Find the best clinic for you below.
A biomechanical assessment analyzes your body’s structure, alignment, strengths, and weaknesses. Biomechanical assessments often focus on gait analysis, or the movement in your lower limbs. This movement can impact your entire body’s mechanics during walking and running, but also lifting heavy objects, while sitting, or performing an athletic activity like swinging a bat. Since your body’s kinetic motion is all interconnected, incorrect mechanics can cause a chain reaction. For instance, if one of your feet – which has 28 bones and over 200 ligaments and muscles – is not working optimally, it may cause pain elsewhere or impact your ability to balance.
Benefits of a Biomechanical Assessment
Your physical therapist will be analyzing your body in both standing and moving states in order to best understand how your body is working from the ground on up. Your most common benefits from getting a biomechanical assessment include:
Reducing back pain
Reducing pain in your feet
Reducing pain in legs
Preventing injuries to identified weak points
Improved balance
Less wear and tear on joints and stress points
Being able to stay on your feet for longer periods
Who Should Consider Being Assessed?
Since a biomechanical assessment will help improve your body’s overall ergonomics, anyone who is out of alignment may benefit. Most commonly, you may be a good candidate for a biomechanical assessment if you:
Have bunions
Have fallen arches
Have knee issues
Heavy pronation or supination when walking
Long days on your feet
Chronic conditions within your lower back and other lower extremities
What to Expect During Your BioMechanical Assessment
When it comes time to have your biomechanical assessment, your physiotherapist will analyze your body in two different states: stationary and moving. Note, you’ll need your feet bare during the test and can expect the test to take around an hour.
Stationary Analysis:
During your stationary, or static, assessment your clinician will take a look at how your body aligns while not moving. Postural elements will be examined, as will the specific alignment of joints in your legs. From there they will check the motion range of each joint and assess foot and joint position during possible condition-specific tests. Additionally, measurements will likely be taken of your body to identify whether
Dynamic Analysis:
The moving part of your biomechanical assessment will combine video and visual assessments done by the clinician as well as digital reads that are made through pressure plates. During these tests, your physiotherapist’s goal is to analyze where force is being generated and stress is being placed on body parts.
Possible Treatments:
Once the tests are complete, your therapist will combine the eye test with the digital data garnered to create a custom plan to improve your ergonomics. Your plan will include a combination of footwear and insole suggestions, specific exercises, dry needling, as well as mobilization techniques.
Those that strictly adhere to recommendations can start seeing benefits almost immediately. More significant corrections, however, may require follow up visits with your therapist, especially when rehabilitating from an injury or surgery.

I had the pleasure of working with Lauren Lee and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a PT. From our initial evaluation, she correctly diagnosed my injury (later proven correct through an MRI) that my primary care doctor had misdiagnosed, and she properly designed my treatment plan accordingly. She is also extremely easy to work with, caring, encouraging, and knowledgeable. Definitely 5/5 and would return myself for my next injury.
