Alter G
The Alter G-Trainer is a top-of-the-line, anti-gravity treadmill that is used in rehabilitation and training. Originally, it was created for astronaut use at the International Space Station to give them opportunities to exercise each day and combat loss of bone and muscle in a microgravity environment. At Evolution, we use the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill to help patients run without pain or train through injuries. By reducing your effective body weight, there is in turn a reduced impact on joints.
Where can I access the Alter G-Trainer?
The Alter G treadmill is found at several of our locations, including Beverly Hills, South Bay, Playa Vista, and Playa Vista eFit. Explore our locations below to learn more about using Alter G in your training or rehab.
Additionally, all of our Mountain Region locations above utilize a system called Lever, which has a similar effect to Alter G. Lever is also offered in our locations in Darien, CT, and Farmingdale, NY. If you are looking for information on Lever, you can visit their site here.
How Does Alter G Work?
Alter G treadmills are an anti-gravity device used in injury rehab. They can also be used in regular training. Because they work by reducing the weight-bearing load on your lower body, there is less impact on the joints. Special shorts are worn(over regular clothing) while the patient steps into a bubble-like, inflatable enclosure from the waist down. The enclosure is then zipped up so that it creates an airtight seal.
With the lower half of their body inside the bubble, air pressure is then adjusted to unweight the individual on the treadmill. Once the treadmill starts, differential air pressure lifts the person very slightly, so that the impact on their lower half, including their limbs, is reduced.
In addition to creating this ‘anti-gravity’ experience, the Alter G treadmill can collect advanced data during a workout or rehabilitation session. Such information is valuable to your physical therapist in understanding your recovery or adjusting treatment plans. With Alter G, you not only can have an improved rehab or work to increase your mobility to new levels, but you can optimize and track your experience to get the best possible outcome and understand your own progress.
