Therapeutic Cupping (or Myofascial Decompression) is a therapy that helps treat several musculoskeletal disorders by using suction to create negative pressure underneath the cup. Evolution offers cupping for patients to correct movement patterns that may cause pain or tightness.

What is Therapeutic Cupping?
Therapeutic Cupping is an adaptation of an ancient technique. The purpose of this technique is to promote health and healing by loosening soft tissue and connective tissue, including scars and adhesions. In addition, it’s also thought to improve blood circulation and increase lymphatic flow. This therapy can improve functional mobility and joint performance.
Cupping utilizes silicone or plastic cups and a vacuum pistol to create suction on the body’s surface. These cups are moved over the skin using gliding and rotating techniques while gently pulling up on the cup, or may be left in one position for a short time to facilitate joint mobilization or soft tissue release. Suction reaches deep into the soft tissue and its attachments. Another benefit is to pull inflammatory products from an injury site to the surface of the skin where the lymphatic system can more readily eliminate them.
Benefits of Therapeutic Cupping
Experts have used cupping for many decades to ease back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other problems. It’s becoming more common for patients to request cupping to relieve chronic muscle soreness. Cupping is a relatively low-risk therapy and offers several benefits, such as:
- Release scar tissue and fascial adhesions
- Improve blood and lymph circulation
- Reduce painful trigger points
- Clear congestion and help treat asthma
- Improve varicose and spider veins
- Decrease toxins
- Reduce stretch marks and scars
- Promote mobility and range of motion (ROM)
Who Should Consider Therapeutic Cupping?
For most patients, cupping is safe to try and can be used in conjunction with other physical therapy techniques, such as soft tissue mobilization. In general, it’s believed to promote healing and muscle recovery. Cupping is also used to treat the following issues and conditions:
- Neck, shoulder, back, and knee pain
- Skin issues such as acne and hives
- Sore muscles
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- High blood pressure
